MISSION
X OTTAWA PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL IS A LEADING PROPO-
NENT OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN OTTAWA. THROUGH ITS PRO-
GRAMMING,
X INCREASES EXPOSURE AND RECOGNITION
FOR LOCAL, CANADIAN AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS. X IS COMMITTED TO ADVANCING PHOTOGRAPHIC KNOWLEDGE, CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN OTTAWA AND GATINEAU.
OTTAWA AND GATINEAU
X's main objective is to increase awareness of photo-
graphic art in the
capital region, and create opportunities for photographic artists and enthusiasts.
X aims to create new viewing, showing, educational and networking possibilities accessible to the total spectrum of photo creators, enthusiasts and exhibitors including: artists, students, collectors, amateur photographers and the general public.
X's short-term artistic goals are to gain exposure for the work of as many photographic artists as possible towards an increased understanding and appreciation of the breadth of work in existence, and to encourage art spaces and curators to assemble photographic exhibitions.
Long term artistic goals include the evolution of a strong curatorial presence on the X team that would lead to the development of such initiatives as an annual juried X exhibition and more involved and rigorous annual themes that might come to define movements in the field instead of just echoing them.

THEME 2008
"The Decisive Moment"
The split-second judgment that a photographer makes every time a picture is taken. It is a term most commonly associated with renowned photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. Cartier-Bresson stated that, "there is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative." It is a difficult skill to develop but one that has the power to extract the truth, to tell a story or evoke an emotion in the blink of an eye.
With a career that spanned half a century and many different photograph-
ic styles, Cartier-Bresson's influence is undeniable. His exploration into Realism through photojournalism honed his photographic eye, while his Modernist approach played with line, tone, and a matter-of-fact represent-
ation of his subject matter. Cartier-
Bresson's candid street portraits reflected his interest in the everyday, his passion for his craft, and his skill as a decision maker.
This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Henri Cartier-Bresson's birth during the second annual run of
X Ottawa Photography Festival.
